The Browning Jacksonville Concert reviews
What a great show!
Before they were married, I have been a fan of Susan The Browning and Derek Trucks.
I have seen them together either in Soul Stew Revival or with her sitting in with his band three times before.
Especially the expensive ones, after buying their new album, I was a little hesitant to get tickets as I thought the album did not demonstrate the amazing talent of the musicians in this band.
Of course, I bought the expensive tickets anyway, and I was not disappointed.
The show was intense, full of old favorites from Derek and the Dominoes and great versions of songs from the new album. THIS BAND BLEW THE HOUSE DOWN!
The band is amazing. Derek (clearly the bandleader) has recreated the power of the Allman Brothers' rhythm section (including the Allman's bass man himself, Oteil Burbrage).
Derek's playing is as always, dynamically and musically stellar. Both drummers are excellent, the horn section is funky and fun, and the back ground singers (including the lead singer from Derek's old band) are great.
After every song, the crowd was on their feet. Great music and talent without gimmicks or overreliance on technology, the logical extension of what Duane Allman was trying to create when he integrated his jazz approach to rock and blues.
Her powerful voice was perfect for the music, and her guitar playing (particularly on one of their new songs) brought the crowd to their feet. Actually, the crowd was on their feet after every song. Great music and talent without gimmicks or overreliance on technology, the logical extension of what Duane Allman was trying to create when he integrated his jazz approach to rock and blues.
The great surprise (I guess) is how Susan was the star in this setting. Derek and Susan have found the right band to showcase their individual talents and their perfect sound as a couple.
I look forward to many more years of seeing them play.
